Montserrat in Spain is a noted tourist attraction and is best known for the historic shrine in this region. About 55 kilometres away from Barcelona, the shrine of Montserrat is situated on top of a rugged mountain and is considered to be one of the most important pilgrimage spots in Spain and holds much importance in Europ. Millions of pilgrims have visited Montserrat annually, since the site was built in the 13th century. Montserrat isalso considered to be a sacred spot by newlymarried Spanish couples.
The shrine of Montserrat is home to about 80 monks who welcome visitors personally when they arrive at the monastery. The monks also urge visitors to be part of the daily activities such as the Mass carried out at the monastery. Right beside the monastery is the basilica that holds the statue of La Moreneta within it. Made out of wood, the Black Virgin or La Moreneta is seen with Jesus seated on her lap. It is said that the statue has gained a darker hue essentially due to the lapse of time since its creation.
The monastery at Montserrat is home to the statue of La Moreneta, often referred to as the Black Virgin. The history of the statue dates back to 50 AD, during which St. Luke is believed to have sculpted it. The best time to visit Montserrat is during the week since the number of visitors double during the weekend.
