FC Barcelona clinch the La Liga title and Spanish Cup medal
Malaga 1 Barcelona 3
This really was more of an exhibition game as opposed to a real La Liga game and it was not even a first team exhibition game. Barcelona in effect played a full second team. In the English Premiership, resting the full 1st team would incur a serious fine from the English FA, but this is not an issue in Spain. With the Champions league final just a few days away, it seems logical to rest the players ahead of what is a vital game, to end the season.
In this last la Liga game for the season, Barcelona had already won and received the Championship trophy and there was really nothing to play for except pride. The Barcelona second team in fact had little problem to see off Malaga, despite going down 1-0. Three goals over a 40 minute period left Barcelona easy winners. All eyes now to this coming Saturday. Manchester United v Barcelona.
Barcelona Parade the La Liga Cup
Despite managing only a 0-0 draw at home against relegation threatened Deportivo, few fans cared given that Barcelona had managed to secure the league title several days before with a win several Kilometres away in Levante. The fans came in their masses in this last home game to see Barcelona enjoy the title celebrations, with the team handed the cup at the end of the game.
Celebrations for the players will be put on hold with the need to keep focus and fitness ahead of the Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium in London, against Manchester United. Manchester United also managed to secure the English Premiership on the weekend - so both sides are likely to play weaker sides in their final league games. 28th May should be quite a spectacle and Messi could well be the difference between two very impressive sides this season.
Barcelona in the Spanish Cup
It really has been quite a few weeks for Barcelona with a loss in the Spanish Cup but then on gaining revenge on Real Madrid, with Barca reaching the Champions League Final at Madrid's expense. This was another game against an arch rival although this time in the form of city rivals, Espanyol. Fighting for a UEFA Cup place for next season, Espanyol have all to play for with a few games left in the season, but this need was not matched by a desire on the field.
A few minutes into the second half, a Pique goal took the game to 2-0 and effectively sealed a game which also saw a 29th minute Iniesta goal. Barcelona would have loved nothing more than to have lifted the La Liga cup in front of their home crowd and against Espanyol but a 6-2 away win from Real Madrid the day before, has delayed the inevitable title win for another match.
Real Sociedad 2 Barcelona 1
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid lost this weekend and it is extremely rare for both to lose in one weekend. Clearly the pressure and focus on the Champions League game between the two is at the forefront of everyone's mind. For Barcelona, with a nice 8 point lead in La Liga, the loss in the league game will do little to stop them from taking the title and with 4 games left Barca can focus on the Champions League.
Watch on 3rd May for the return game between Barcelona and Real Madrid to decide which of the 2 should meet Manchester United in the final. All smart money is on the Catalans who take a 2-0 lead into the 2nd leg v Real Madrid.
