La Liga Player Strikes

In an era when unemployment is over 20% in Spain, the Spanish players still feel that they deserve more money and there are many reasons behind the players concerns, with some players in some lower positions and leagues behind on being paid. For the fans though, this Spanish football strike meant that Week 1 of the La Liga season was postponed and the first La Liga game now for Barcelona will be a home game on the 29th August against Villareal.

In the meantime though, for Barcelona, and having already picked up the Spanish Sup Cup (with a 5-4 aggregate victory over Real Madrid) now try to win the European Super Cup with a game which brings the UEFA Cup Champions, Porto, up againt Champions league Champions, FC Barcelona. Wil this be Fabregas' second medal within 2 weeks of signing for the Catalans? This game takes place on the 26th August....

Fabregas SIGNS for FC Barcelona

It must have been the longest transfer scenario in football history, with Fabregas on the verge of moving to Barcelona from Arsenal for the last 3 years. After winning the World Cup, the other Spanish players even got Fabregas to put on an FC Barcelona top in anticipation of his return to the side last summer. It has taken until now though for the transfer to eventually go through and this has been largely welcomed by the local fans. If Barcelona's midfield was not already strong enough, they now also have one of the worlds top players also fighting for a place in the team.

Barcelona drew with Real Madrid in mid-week in the Spanish Super Cup and a 2-2 draw means both sides head into the second leg tonight, with Barca this time having home advantage.

The countdown begins to the start of La Liga

With less than 3 weeks to go until week 1 of the 2011-2012 season, it has been relatively quiet on the transfer front, but one suspects it could liven up between now and Barcelona's away game to Malaga on the 21st August.

In a pre-season warm-up, Barcelona were defeated 2-1 by the team who they beat in the Champions League Final - with Manchester United taking a victory away at last, versus the Catalans. Taking place in Washington, USA, not too much should be read into this game. One would not be surprised though if these 2 football powers ended up fighting for the cup again this coming season in the Champions League.
