The Marato Barcelona is an annual Marathon that takes place in March in Barcelona, Spain and is run over the classic distance of 26 miles (approx 42km) in the heart of the city. One of the bigger marathons in the European events calendar, this event attracts with runners from around the world taking part in the
race. The event is relatively new and is part of a weekend of events which attracts people from all parts of Spain and further afield.
The Barcelona Marathon main event normally begins at 8:30 am and participants have a maximum of six hours to finish the course. The race is a street event, through the streets of Barcelona that begins at the Avinguda MarĂa Cristina, which is also the location for the completion of the race. The weather conditions for the marathon tend to generally be warm for running, with the temperature often over 20 degrees, which makes the course challenging.
The marathon has prizes for winners in six different categories based on the age of the runners. The various categories in the race are the Sub 23, for participants from 18 years to 22 years old, seniors, age group 23 to 34 years old, Veterans A, B, C and D with age groups 35-44, 45-54, 55-64 and 65 years and above. Apart from the main event, there is also a breakfast race that takes place in the morning which is used by athletes to warm up for the main race.
